The Woodland Chamber Music Workshop is an inclusive and nurturing program for adult musicians. Inaugurated in the summer of 2007 by Josh Aerie, the Workshop has attracted more than 375 participants over the past 12 years.

Strad Magazine listed the WCMW as the only U.S. program recommended as best “For Adult Beginners” in their 2010 “SummerPlus” publication, and we’ve also featured prominently in the subsequent editions.

We’re proud of this recognition and welcome all skill levels to our Workshop, held annually in mid-June on the beautiful North Shore of Lake Superior in Tofte, Minnesota.

A note from Josh Aerie, WCMW Director & Founder:

Hello!

Thanks for your interest in the Woodland Chamber Music Workshop! I’m Josh Aerie, the Director and Founder of the WCMW. It’s my great pleasure to share in chamber music-making with friends old and new each June on the shores of the Great Lake. Won’t you join us this summer?

~ A Short History of the WCMW ~

I founded the Woodland Chamber Music Workshop as a way of expanding community outreach and musical involvement for adult musicians in northern Minnesota. The first annual Workshop ran as a weekly meeting in Duluth from June – July 2007 and met with an unexpected degree of success, attracting nearly 20 wind, brass, and string participants. The Workshop was held once a week and included ensemble coaching and rehearsal, with an emphasis on building ensemble skills and rehearsal technique. The Workshop culminated in a final concert to which the community at-large was invited to attend.

Building upon the success of that inaugural Workshop, in 2008 I decided to launch a weekend intensive session on the North Shore of Lake Superior. This weekend workshop served as the capstone to the Duluth Workshop, and to my delight attracted 30 participants from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Energized by 2008’s success, in 2009 I expanded the Woodland Chamber Music Workshop into two sessions: a 6-day “full session” and a 4-day “short session.” I moved the Workshop to the beautiful Surfside on Lake Superior resort, which features luxury townhomes and award-winning cuisine. Again attracting nearly 30 people, including participants from Chicago, the Twin Cities, Wisconsin and beyond, the WCMW 2009 was another smashing success.

Since, the WCMW has continued to grow. We’ve welcomed participants from all over the country, from coast to coast, north and south. We’ve had nearly every instrument represented from the string, wind, brass, percussion and keyboard families. In past years we’ve welcomed special guest artists, including nationally renowned composer Rick Sowash and former Minnesota Orchestra cellist, Mina Fisher.

Each day is structured to allow participant musicians to immerse themselves in many aspects of chamber music: ensemble and individual practice; coachings by faculty members; technique symposiums; and sight-reading sessions. In the evening, after eating award-winning cuisine in a communal dinning room, the day concludes with all participants gathering for chamber orchestra rehearsal.

Monday evening features artist-faculty the Gichigami Trio, Betty Braunstein, Rose Sciaroni, and Kevin Miescke in a public concert. Thursday includes a master class, also open to the public and featuring participant ensembles, and the WCMW Chamber Orchestra concert, featuring select participant soloists. On Friday the Workshop concludes with a public Gala concert featuring all of the participant chamber groups.

In addition, many participants take the initiative to request extra coaching sessions, a private lesson with one of the faculty, or organize impromptu sight-reading sessions of a favorite piece with musicians drawn from the faculty and other participants. Activities enjoyed by past participants include salsa dancing; hiking, biking, kayaking, and other outdoor adventures along Lake Superior’s North Shore; and quiet time relaxing at Surfside in the pool, hot tub, and sauna.

~ Join Us! ~

It’s a joy for me to be able to provide adult musicians with a means of building their musical skills through small ensemble participation and the creation of their own great music. On behalf of the artist-faculty and our enthusiastic veteran participants (some of whom have been with us since the inaugural Workshop), come and join us this summer - we’d love to make great music with you in a beautiful place!

Musically yours,

Josh Aerie
